Cliff Derdeyn  was born in 1975 and soon moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil where he received his first introductions to martial arts via Brazilian Jujutsu (BJJ) and Capoiera. It would not be  until the age of six that he began his study of martial arts in earnest in Judo. After six years in Judo his family moved to Austin Texas where he continued his studies in the Japanese martial arts vis Aikido under the instruction of Mark Leidig Sensei (formerly of Shin Budo Kai Aikido under Shihan Imaizumi Shizuo). With exposure to Muy Thai, (and continued study of Capoiera and BJJ), arnis with some involvement in the Chinese Internal Arts his focus resumed in earnest with the Japanese based arts. During college he taught both Aikido and Capoiera to at-risk youth via the Gary Job Corp Center in San Marcos, university students Texas State University (TSU), and women's basic self-defense (TSU). This was also the beginning of his studies with Shihan  Ed Loomis in Aikijujutsu under Soke Amos Hunter. In 2003  Mr. Derdeyn began traveling extensively to train with as many of the pre and post war Shihans of Aikido that remain. During his travels he had the honor and privilege to work with many of the giants of the Aikido  sphere as well as many other apex martial artists. It was at the 2003 Aiki-expo in Las Vegas, Nevada he had the fortune of meeting Kuroda Tetsuzan of Shinbukan Kuroda Ryugi. Mr. Derdeyn has since focused his training  in the Japanese Arts exclusively. He feels that these arts best suite his outlook and persona. Collectively, Mr. Derdeyn  has studied the martial arts for the last twenty-six years and he trains in and instructs in Aikido, Aikijujutsu, and part of a study group based in San Antonio, Texas for Shinbukan Kuroba Rugi.
